Spoek Mathambo Father Creeper Album Review

BY Jody Rosen   |  March 26, 2012

Spoek Mathambo, from South Africa, is accommodating to try just about anything. On aboriginal anthology for Sub Pop, Mathambo raps and sings; he dabbles in post-punk, dub, electro; there are belt jive-style guitars and grime-style beat-bursts; there are protests adjoin the blood-diamond barter ("Put Some Red On It") and laments about what a affliction it is to accept to plan for a active ("We Can Work"). It's an admirably active collection which, at its best - in the skittering "Venison Fingers" and the synth-smeared appellation clue - manages to be both danceable and eerie. But Mathambo is at best a advantageous singer-rapper, and the almanac is so all over the place, so active from song to song and even bar to bar, a adviser never gets a adventitious to achieve in and grab hold.
